2017

The most recent version of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) consensus guidelines for the treatment of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) was published in 2016, identifying both a more strategic approach to the administration of the available systemic therapy choices, and a greater emphasis on the use of ablative techniques, including surgery. At the 2016 ESMO Asia Meeting, in December 2016, it was decided by both ESMO and the Japanese Society of Medical Oncology (JSMO) to convene a special guidelines meeting, endorsed by both ESMO and JSMO, immediately after the JSMO 2017 Annual Meeting. Development of artemisinin resistance in malaria therapy

2019

Malaria affects 200 million people worldwide. Today, the most successful treatments are artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACT). Resistance has already been described for the elder anti-malarials chloroquine, sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine and mefloquine. Unfortunately, over the last few years there has also been an emerging resistance to the successfully used drug artemisinin, especially in African and Asian countries. A systematic PubMed literature research was conducted for studies published between January 2002 and December 2018. Despite ACTs continue to be first line treatment, the number of studies is rising reporting on artemisinin resistance mutations. Most publications reported on…

Clinical usefulness of Glycated Albumin in the diagnosis of diabetes: Results from an Italian study

2018

Objectives: Glycated Albumin (GA) has been proposed as a screening marker for diabetes in Asian countries in the last years. Nevertheless, few studies have been conducted in Caucasian population. The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical usefulness of GA in diabetes diagnosis in Caucasian asymptomatic subjects considered at risk of diabetes based on medical history and Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG). Design and methods: Three hundred and thirty-four Caucasian subjects having one or more risk factor for diabetes, and/or FPG ranging from 5.6 mmol/L to 6.9 mmol/L with no symptoms for diabetes were enrolled in this study. Plasma GA was measured by an enzymatic method (quantILab Glycated A…

Klatskin Tumour: Meticulous Preoperative Work-Up and Resection Rate

2011

BACKGROUND: Surgery represents the only potentially curative treatment of hilar cholangiocarcinoma (hilCC). It may be suggested that meticulous preoperative work-up in Asian countries leads to higher resection rates. METHOD: One hundred and eighty-two patients treated in our department between 1998 and 2008 were included in an analysis based on our prospectively recorded database. Among them, 75 % had a percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography as part of their diagnostic work-up. A total of 160 patients underwent explorative surgery and 123 patients were resected (77 % of patients undergoing exploration, 68 % of all patients). RESULTS: Ninety-one percent of the patients were diagnosed to h…

Women’s empowerment and child mortality: the case of Bangladesh

2018

Bangladesh is the Southern Asian country that has been experiencing the highest absolute decline in the Under Five Mortality Rate in the past 15 years. This paper focuses on the importance of women’s education and empowerment variables in explaining this extraordinary result. We use a twolevel multilevel logistic regression to take into account the great differences among territorial communities in terms of child mortality reduction. It emerges that the importance of woman’s empowerment - measured as individual and as mother - remains relevant even when the context is considered. A sensitivity analysis has been conducted to test the relevance of different indicators of female empowerment.

Gender equality has progressed a great deal in recent decades in response to modernisation, industrialisation, and the generally rising level of education. The analysis in this article focuses on civic participation and investigates its relation to equalitarian gender beliefs. Multi-level regression models and data from World Values Survey (WVS) collected from 46 countries in 2005 allow depicting the relationships. The findings show that membership in ci…

Stress with parents and peers: how adolescents from 18 nations cope with relationship stress.

2015

We investigated how adolescents from five regions around the world perceived and coped with parent- and peer-related stress. The study comprised N = 4957 adolescents (mean age of 15.2 years) from 18 countries. The study used self-report measures for stress perception and coping style.Across countries, adolescents perceived parent-related stress to be considerably greater than peer-related stress. They coped less actively with parent-related stress than with peer-related stress. Significant differences emerged with respect to geographic region and key demographic indicators. Adolescents from Eastern European and Western countries had generally quite low levels of stress. Adolescents from South…
